So it was a broken rail this morning, causing delays of 40 minute up to London, and a very full platform when I arrived at Chelmsford.

The 08h44 was slated to arrive at 09h13, the 08h58 at 09h12 and the 09h02 at 09h20, an anagram of itself. It didn’t quite work out like that in the end, as the 08h58 arrived at 09h13 – before the 08h44 – and I leapt on to find a seat.

The screens were as confused as the passengers, listing all manner of strange and non-existant stations at which we were warned the train wouldn’t be stopping: Shenfield London End Junction, Ilford Junction… These places might exist on a railway engineering map, but they certainly don’t appear in the timetable, and they don’t have any platforms.
